Bentley Parish Council-Tree Survey

Trees are a part of our heritage, and we are their custodians. Their important environmental role is also now widely recognised. Together with our village Tree Warden, (Hew Pike), the Parish Council now wishes to compile a record of our trees, and where appropriate help in their protection.

Specifically, we are looking to record those trees, or groups of trees, that have a significant impact on the Parish landscape. Some may then be considered for a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). (The principle effect of a TPO is to prohibit the cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping, wilful damage or destruction of a tree or group of trees, without the consent of the Local Authority)

Bear in mind, too, that within the Conservation Area of the village, this rule applies to all trees. Thus, all have a TPO on them. In very general terms the Conservation Area runs along the line of the old main road from (inclusive) Holmwood Cottages in the west to (exclusive) the recreation ground in the east, and extends for about a hectare (100 metres width) on both sides of the road. The Parish Clerk can provide further detail.

If you have a tree in your garden or on your land, or know of one in the local landscape that you think should be recorded, please let the Parish Clerk or the Tree Warden know. Do try to tell us the exact location of the Tree(s) and the species if you know it.

Examples of the kind of trees outside gardens that we have in mind are the Italian Black Poplar on the southern side of the old recreation ground west of station road, the Oak Tree on the ridge line north of Big West field (the field NE of Pax Hill), and of course the Lime and Beech Avenue between the Church and Bury Court. (This is already protected by a TPO). There are many others, but clearly we cannot record every tree or group of trees, so please exercise your own judgement about those that are important.
