Although the village fete may seem to be a rather old fashioned concept it is nevertheless as important today as it has ever been over the 124 years it has been running but, perhaps, for different reasons. Whilst the aspect where we live in Bentley is rural, for many it is sad that the farming community, which existed not so long ago where villagers would know and rely on each other, no longer exists. Today, apart from being part of the various village clubs and associations we may have little opportunity to get to know and spend time with fellow villagers. That is why our Fete is so important as it is the one event of the year when the village comes together in a common effort to part socialise with our neighbours and in so doing raise funds for the organisations and associations in Bentley.
The financial aspect of the Fete is important for apart from a celebration of our community the Fete Committee has an eye on achieving a financial surplus each year so that we can give something back to village associations and organisations such as the Memorial Hall, the School, the Scout Group, the Recreation Ground and the Church. In the last 16 years the Fete has raised sufficient funds to meet donation requests of more than £80,000, an average of more than £5,000 a year.
The Fete Committee is responsible for much of the activity on Fete Day but what goes on in the main marquee is organised by the Flower Show Committee. This is a veritable showcase of the horticultural, decorative and culinary skills of our villagers. It is unlikely that anyone entering the Marquee will not be impressed by the range of competitive categories and the number of entries which reached a new high in 2017.
Situated where we are and with all our amenities many people consider we are extremely fortunate to live in Bentley and being a part of organisations such as the Fete and Flower Show committees can be extremely enjoyable and rewarding. If you feel that you would like to be involved contact either Hugh Chissell, Chairman of the Fete Committee on 01420.23117 or Ruth Ross Thomson, Chairperson of the Flower Show Committee on 01420.520322.
